about

'Out of Our Systems' is the second recording by the trio consisting of poet/pianist Eliot Cardinaux, bassist Will McEvoy, and drummer Max Goldman. Like their debut album 'take me by the hand of darkness,' this second offering circumvents a listener’s expectations, swerving consciously & consistently into unknown terrain, while newly showcasing the trio’s ability to navigate and elaborate on longer forms.

The album features written compositions by two of the trio’s members, namely, Cardinaux and McEvoy, Goldman working as a composer in the moment, breathing life and space into the others’ structured forms.

What is most notable about this album is the variety of moods & modes the trio employs and inhabits throughout. Out of Our Systems is as diverse in its singular ambitions, as it is wide in its conceptual scope. From the poetry, “scored, by turns as inscription, and voiced for performance,” as Cardinaux has written, to the two composers’ complementary and contrasting pen work, and the trio’s push/pull approach of molding the material into a living thing, the album is a cinematic odyssey, at once vivid, stark, lush, spacious, witty… and it tips.

As this trio matures, their music remains no less alive, marking them as a unit made up of dedicated equals.
